There have long been rumours
that Costco's vodka is the same as Grey Goose — here's one expert's opinion
There has long been a rumour that a Costco vodka
imported from France is produced by the high-end brand Grey Goose. Vodka
enthusiasts say this is why Costco’s Kirkland bottle tastes so good. It has
frequently defeated Grey Goose in blind tastings despite being a third of the
price: Costco’s 1.75-litre French vodka costs $US19.99, while you can expect to
pay about $US60 for the same-size bottle of Grey Goose, which is owned by
Bacardi. […]

[“Steals Live Rattlesnake,” The Inter Ocean (Chicago, IL), 10 February 1908. Of this report of
the theft of a suitcase containing a rattlesnake, the Historian of the Strange
(Robert Damon Schneck) observes that the “lack of detail, too good to be true
quality, and implicit lesson, suggest that this is an urban legend.” I am also
dubious; but for the record, here is another report of a thief unwittingly
snatching a venomous snake.]

Bag snatcher grabs slippery
surprise
Police are warning inner Sydney residents to beware of
a venomous red-bellied black snake loose in the suburb of Redfern after a
robbery backfired on the unsuspecting thief. A professional snake catcher was
called to a unit in Redfern last night to catch the snake. He put it in a heavy
canvas bag, which he then placed in the passenger seat of his car. While
stopped at traffic lights at about 10:30pm AEDT, police say a thief opened the
car's passenger door and snatched the bag. […]

Sex trafficking and the Super
Bowl: Myths and the real issues
[…] Some groups claim that the influx of crowds for
the Super Bowl contributes to an increase in sex trafficking. But leading anti-trafficking
groups, such as Polaris Project and the International Human Trafficking
Institute, say no evidence supports the claim. Trafficking occurs year-round in
communities around the country, they say, and that's where prevention efforts
are most needed. But that's not stopping outreach groups or the city of Atlanta
from raising the issue during Super Bowl. […]

Germany: Sausage museum
planned at former concentration camp
BERLIN (AP) -- German media are reporting on plans to
build a sausage museum on the site of a former Nazi concentration camp for
Jewish slave laborers. Public broadcaster MDR, news agency DPA and others
reported Thursday that the German Bratwurst Museum will be moved to the site,
on the outskirts of the eastern town of Muehlhausen. About 700 Jewish women
from Eastern Europe where imprisoned at the camp during the Nazi era. […] MDR
reported that the association operating the museum was unaware of the
location's history, but said it was willing to commemorate the past appropriately.
[An inadvisable choice of site for a sausage museum,
given the prevalence of “human sausage factory” rumors in Europe following
WWII. See Eda Kalmre, The Human Sausage Factory
(2013).]
