Nevada Highway Patrol pulls over hearse driver in HOV lane

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- When local law enforcement warns motorists that they must be accompanied by another person to utilize HOV lanes, the small print reads as follows: passengers must be alive. Drivers have tried it with dummies and pets in the past, but Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Smaka encountered a carpooling first on Monday — a hearse driver shuttling the deceased. NHP tweeted the following after the incident: "The driver had the dearly departed in the back, he thought the deceased could be counted as two people. I guess we should clarify this, living, breathing people count for the HOV lane." […]

A New Jersey man was busted for kidnapping after cops pulled him over for apparently driving solo in the carpool lane — and discovered his terrified victims in the back seat, officials said Saturday. Port Authority cops pulled over Luis Moreno Jr. because he appeared to be alone in his silver 2002 Toyota Sequoia as he entered an HOV lane approaching the George Washington Bridge on I-95 in Fort Lee, N.J., at 8:05 a.m. Friday, officials said. “I have two passengers in the back,” Moreno protested, rolling down his rear driver’s-side window to show the cop. Judge: Fetuses Don’t Count in HOV Lanes

PHOENIX (AP) - Fetuses do not count as passengers when it comes to determining who may drive in the carpool lane, a judge ruled. Candace Dickinson was fined $367 for improper use of a carpool lane, but contended the fetus inside her womb allowed her to use the lane. Motorists who use the lanes normally must carry at least one passenger during weekday rush hours. Municipal Judge Dennis Freeman rejected Dickinson’s argument Tuesday, applying a “common sense” definition in which an individual is someone who occupies a ``separate and distinct″ space in a vehicle. When Steve Chapnell, 41, was stopped for driving in the carpool lane alone, he calmly insisted he did have a passenger with him – his imaginary friend! […] [It should go without saying that this is a made-up story.]
