TABUK -- Tabuk police denied recent rumors of a young woman who has been spreading the AIDS virus by seducing men. The woman, said to be a Syrian national who entered the Kingdom illegally, was alleged to have lured men and teenagers into hotels and furnished apartments with the aim of transmitting the virus to them.

According to police, the rumor spread via social networking sites. The official spokesman for Tabuk Police, Maj. Khaid Ghabban, said police investigated the rumors and were led to a dead end.

“This is purely fictional and not reality,” said Ghabban while urging people to verify stories before passing them on as fact and contact authorities for accurate information if they were in doubt. -- SG

HIV-infection Rumor Lead to Detention in Beijing

Xinhua

A man has been put under criminal detention for spreading an HIV-infection scare, police in Beijing said on Thursday.

The Beijing municipal public security bureau said in a statement that it was informed Tuesday that a Sina Weibo blogger used the service to spread an HIV-infection rumor.

The microblog said "several people have entered Beijing with needle tubes filled with the HIV virus," and "there are people who have been pricked by needles of AIDS infectors."

Beijing police authorities later confirmed the information was false and detained writer of the microblog, a man surnamed Li, on Wednesday afternoon.

Xinjiang AIDS attack rumor denied

By Huang Jingjing (Global Times)

Both public security and health authorities on Wednesday refuted a rumor claiming that a large group of HIV/AIDS carriers had infiltrated large cities and intended to transmit the virus by contaminating food sources.

The rumor, that went viral, claimed that some 20,000 HIV-positive sufferers from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region had gone to major cities across the country and laced restaurant food with their blood.

It said those attackers were incited by separatists and terrorists, and warned people to not eat Xinjiang food. [...]

Killing this `Urban Myth': Hair extensions cannot give you AIDS

with James Hall

There is already too much hysteria surrounding AIDS. More false rumours and misinformation have the potential of wreaking tremendous damage in this country that is already so inflicted.

Consider this week's claim being spread over the Internet locally, which "reports" that inexpensive hair extensions can cause AIDS. [...]

Jamaica PM appeals for calm amid abduction claims

KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 12, 2008 - Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding has appealed for calm in the wake of reports of the abduction of children from schools across the island and has sought to reassure the country that the security forces have stepped up their vigilance.

He said he was assured at an emergency meeting with the Ministers of Education and National Security, the High command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and other stakeholders that ongoing investigations so far show that "there is a significant gap between the reality and the perception". AIDS Prickers, Trinidad, 1986

Getting under their skin

Courtenay Bartholomew

[...] Now, in the early period of the epidemic when it was foolishly thought that AIDS only occurred in the homosexual community (in February 1986, a few days before the Carnival), there was a widespread and false rumour that certain homosexual men were pricking revellers with needles at public fetes. The rumour quickly reached the Trinis in "Brooklyn" and everyone feared that it would stop the Carnival (as if that could needle anybody into stopping the Carnival. Certainly not rain!). There was national panic. The press immediately rang me and a front page headline of the Trinidad Guardian of February 7, 1986 read: "Bartholomew scotches rumours that needle pricks can cause AIDS.'' It was eventually a fearless Carnival. [...]

'Spooky House' Case Splits Ohio Suburb

WORTHINGTON, Ohio (AP) -- It has come to be known as the Spooky House Incident: A group of teenagers in this quaint older suburb who tried to scare themselves on a ''ghost hunt'' and a recluse who responded with gunfire, leaving two lives wrecked.

A pretty blonde high school cheerleader, Rachel Barezinsky, is crippled for life. Allen S. Davis, roused from an eccentric but otherwise unoffending existence, was sentenced last month to 19 years in prison for what he describes as defending his home. [...]
