Geneva Steinberg, “Culture Corner,” Caveat Emptor (G & G Enterprises,
Charleston, S.C.), Fall 1971, vol. 1, no. 1, pp. 23-4. The writer (and
co-editor of Caveat Emptor, a UFO
magazine) quotes from “Funny
Stories,” an article by Jerome Beatty, Jr. that appeared in the
November 1970 issue of Esquire magazine,
where Beatty relates a contemporary legend about a young woman who was
overheard on a bus discussing how she calmed children she babysat by putting
their heads in a gas oven. This story, dubbed “The Harried Baby-Sitter” by
Beatty, is called “The Clever Baby-sitter” by Jan Brunvand, who for some reason
has failed to consider the possibility that such a legend may be implanted in
informants’ minds by an insane higher force, as Steinberg posits.
